Public EV charging stations coming to Hatteras Island
CHEC is excited to announce the installation of two public electric vehicle (EV) charging stations on Hatteras Island. One station will be installed in Rodanthe in the parking lot of Kitty Hawk Kites, and another station will be placed at Hatteras Landing in Hatteras Village. The Level 2 ChargePoint stations will each have two charging ports and are capable of charging any brand of EV. On average, it will take a driver 3.5 hours to fully charge their vehicle with a Level 2 station.
It is CHEC’s hope that the public stations will attract new visitors to Hatteras Island and pave the way for the future of EVs in the area. Nationally, EV sales have grown exponentially in the past five years. This trend is expected to continue and CHEC is excited to be taking the first steps to make Hatteras Island EV-friendly. Initially, the charging stations will be free to use, while the cooperative collects valuable data about usage and driver habits.
CHEC is also working to bring rebates and attractive time-of-use rates to members with home charging stations. Details about these rebates and rates will be announced this fall.
