Updates on new Bonner and Pea Island bridge ….WITH VIDEO By IRENE NOLAN
Dare County has released another video update on the Bonner Bridge replacement construction and the construction on the new interim bridge over the Pea Island Inlet.
The news is that the traffic pattern was shifted at the south end of the Bonner replacement to make room for construction of the new southern approach. On July 25, crews drove the first pilings that will support that elevated roadway.
According to the N.C. Department of Transportation, as of Aug. 1, there were 30 pilings that have been driven in the water and nine on land.
Also, progress continues to be made on the interim bridge on Pea Island that will replace the smaller, temporary bridge that was quickly erected over an inlet cut by Hurricane Irene in 2011.
Work crews on the interim bridge have completed the installation of nine spans that will support the superstructure over Pea Island Inlet.
NCDOT reminds travelers to slow down and use caution at both work sites and to be aware that night road closures are possible.
One-lane road closures are possible between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. Monday through Friday until Sept. 15.
Full road closures are possible for 30 minutes at a time between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. Monday through Friday until Sept. 15.
