The North Carolina Department of Transportation has awarded a contract to perform scour protection on three bents and rehabilitation of one bent on the Bonner Bridge over Oregon Inlet in Dare County.
 
Bents are commonly used to support beams and girders. The scour protection will consist of rock filled wire baskets being placed on the bottom of the inlet between the bridge supports and large sandbags being placed around the pilings.
 
The $1.8 million contract was awarded to American Bridge Company Inc. of Coraopolis, Pa. Work can begin as early as Aug. 27, with final completion scheduled for no later than Dec. 1.
 
The bridge repair work will ensure the bridge continues to serve as a viable transportation link to the Outer Banks until it is replaced.

Work on the Bonner Bridge replacement is expected to start in December and be completed in 2015.
 
This is one of 24 contracts totaling $119.9 million awarded by DOT in July for highway and bridge projects across North Carolina. NCDOT awarded the contracts to the lowest bidders, as required by state law. The bids received on the projects awarded came in about 9.5 percent, or $12.6 million, below NCDOT estimates.
