UPDATE: Summerfield extradition hearing is Friday
A first court appearance for Nathan Summerfield, the man charged with the murder of Ohio mother Lynn Jackenheimer on Hatteras Island during the July 4 holiday week, is scheduled for Friday, Aug. 17, in the Medina Common Pleas Court in Medina County, Ohio.
The hearing is to address the extradition of Summerfield, 27, back to North Carolina to face the first-degree murder charge.
According to Dare County Sheriff’s Office chief deputy Steve Hoggard, Summerfield could waive extradition and be returned to Dare County rather quickly or fight extradition and extend the process for several days.
Hoggard said in a media release that no decisions regarding the homicide charge will be made by the Ohio court, just the extradition issue.
The chief deputy added that evidence regarding the murder charge will be presented at a session of the Dare County Grand Jury on Sept. 10. Grand jury proceedings are not public.
Jackenheimer, Summerfield’s former girlfriend, was last heard from on July 3 when the couple and her two children were vacationing in Salvo. He returned to Ohio to drop the children with their grandparents and then disappeared.
Jackenheimer’s body was found July14 in Frisco, and an autopsy determined she died of strangulation and stab wounds.
Summerfield was arrested yesterday at motel in Medina, Ohio, not far from Ashland, where he and Jackenheimer lived.
The scheduling of the actual trial may take a considerable amount of time, Hoggard said.
“When there is a decision made regarding the extradition issue,” he said, “we will act appropriately to bring him back to Dare County to have the warrant served and begin the legal proceedings.”
