Storm debris pickup will start Sept. 12 on Hatteras

North Carolina Department of Transportation workers have already begun removal of storm debris from state maintained roads on Roanoke Island.

State and county crews will begin pick up on Hatteras Island beginning Monday, Sept. 12. Crews will pass through areas only once, so residents and businesses are asked to move debris to the side of the road now, separated properly, to ensure service.

To expedite the process, Dare County Public Works requests that residents and businesses properly separate debris into piles as follows:

Yard debris

Building debris, flooded building contents

Metal and flooded appliances

Debris should be placed at curbside, away from fire hydrants, trees, power lines, mailboxes and valves or other items that could be damaged or restrict collection.

For those able to transport debris and wanting to dispose of it more quickly, the county’s Transfer Stations or the Recycling Center in Manteo are available and residential tipping fees for vegetative debris will be waived.
