Minor Ocean Overwash Reported at Pea Island and Ocean View Drive in Avon
Ocean overwash was reported with Wednesday morning’s high tide at several locations on Hatteras Island that are prone to oceanside flooding during storms.
Tide and minimal standing water was reported on Pea Island just south of New Inlet Bridge and at Pea Island Visitors Center, however N.C. Highway 12 was still passable as of noon on Wednesday. The North Carolina Department of Transportation also noted that they had equipment staged and ready to go at several locations along N.C. 12 to help repair any damage that may accompany the storm.
There was also ocean overwash along Ocean View Drive in Avon on Monday morning, although it had not yet affected the highway near the Food Lion shopping plaza.
Florence is forecast to make landfall south of Hatteras and Ocracoke islands sometime late Thursday or Friday as a Category 3 or 4 storm. Oceanside flooding will continue to be a concern throughout the week, particularly close to high tide.
