Day at the Docks on Hatteras is Sept. 18 in Hatteras village
The sixth annual Day at the Docks will be on Saturday, Sept. 18, on the waterfront in Hatteras village.
The celebration brings visitors and island families together to celebrate the living traditions and heritage of Hatteras Island.
“Day at the Docks is a time when our community shares what makes our island a special place where the culture continues to be shaped by the natural environment,” Lynne Foster, event coordinator, said.
The release of white doves into the sky above the harbor by Hatteras Doves will signal the start of festivities at 10 a.m.
Activities on the waterfront will include boat and gear displays, music, educational booths, and special activities for children, including a fishing contest, blue crab races, and fish printing. The always-popular contests, including the concrete marlin competition, net hanging contest, survival suit race, and mullet toss will return this year.
Seafood cooking lessons and demonstrations by well-known local chefs will be held throughout the day. Representatives of Outer Banks Catch, a Dare County consumer education program promoting local seafood, will be on hand. Guests are invited to sample and judge chowders entered in the chowder cook-off sponsored by the Hatteras Island Cancer Foundation.
At the end of the day, workboats will steam into the harbor at 6 p.m. for the Blessing of the Fleet. The festivities will continue into the evening with a lawn dance at the Hatteras Village Community Building at 8 p.m.
