NCDOT Makes Significant Progress on N.C. Highway 12
The North Carolina Department of Transportation reported that significant progress had been made on N.C. Highway 12 on Friday evening.
Road crews on Highway 12 removed sand and debris throughout the day and found no major damage to the pavement from Oregon Inlet to Hatteras village.
NCDOT personnel will also perform a routine inspection of the Bonner Bridge. Assuming there are no major problems there, NCDOT will alert Dare County Emergency Management that the road is ready for traffic. At this point, the county will make appropriate decisions regarding reentry.
On Ocracoke Island, Highway 12 is closed from the Pony Pens northward, as a large section of the road has deep sand and standing water. There initially appears to be no significant damage to the roadway, but NCDOT crews will need to inspect and repair the road before Highway 12 can be opened between the village and the ferry terminal.
As of Friday evening Hatteras and Ocracoke islands remained closed to visitors and residents.
