Bike to the Light or Run for Fun – all for a good cause

Early October will bring two popular annual events to Hatteras Island.
The second annual Bike the Light on Saturday, Oct. 2, will raise money for the projects of the Kiwanis Club of Hatteras Island, including scholarships for Cape Hatteras Secondary School students.
And the seventh annual Fun Run on Saturday, Oct. 9, will benefit the Hatteras Island Cancer Foundation, which helps island cancer patients pay for their medical expenses not covered by insurance.
If you throw in the Carey LeSieur Foundation Bucket Party with its grilling extravaganza and potluck dinner and the Kiwanis lobster sale, it is shaping up to be a good month on the island.
Both islanders and visitors are invited to participate in all of these events.
Bike the Light
The second annual Kiwanis Club of Hatteras Island/Cape Hatteras Electric Cooperative Bike the Light race will be on Saturday, Oct.2.
Registration will begin at 9 a.m. at Cape Hatteras Secondary School of Coastal Studies, and the bike race will be from 10 a.m. until noon. The registration fee is $5, which includes riding in the race and a T-shirt.
Bike the Light is a “zany” 8K bike ride from Cape Hatteras Secondary School to the Lighthouse and back. Folks are encouraged to ride in costumes, and most do.
The new bike and pedestrian path will be used for ease of riding through the town of Buxton. Children and adults of all ages are welcome. Individuals, groups, and teams are encouraged.
The organizers say, “The race will be as fun as you make it, so come dressed up and ready to have a good time. Prizes will be awarded in various categories, including best costume.”
If you don’t have a bike, don’t worry. Ocean Atlantic Rentals is providing bikes at no cost. Snacks and refreshments will also be available to enjoy after the race.
This community event is sponsored by The Kiwanis Club of Hatteras Island, Cape Hatteras Electric Cooperative, along with Hatteras Realty, Midgett Realty, and Outer Beaches Realty.
Proceeds will go to Kiwanis events, including the Christmas Bonfire with Santa, Terrific Kids, Kiwanis Scholarship Program, and Priority One.
