Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge is ‘open for business’
With the reopening of Highway 12 on Hatteras Island Monday evening, Oct. 10, comes the re-opening of Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge. Just in time for fall migration and Wings Over Water, the refuge welcomes visitors to come and enjoy the outdoors and all its wildlife and habitats.
“Pea Island has so much to offer in the fall,” said Bonnie Strawser, Visitor Services Manager for the refuge. “I’m sure we’ll have lots of folks coming out just to see what the refuge looks like at this point. And, we welcome everyone to come and check it out.
“But,” she continues, “we’re really excited to be able to get back into showing off what we do best — providing places for wildlife. It’s not likely that any of our wildlife even noticed the damage from the storm. For them, it’s been business as usual. But, for folks who come to observe or photograph wildlife, Pea Island’s reopening is cause to celebrate.”
Fall bird walks resume this week, meeting at the Visitor Center and beginning at 8 a.m. on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.
The Visitor Center is open daily from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
“Things will certainly be different on Pea Island,” added Strawser. “The dike around North Pond was breached on the back side, so only the east/west dikes are open to the public. We are moving forward as quickly as we can to repair that dike, so we can continue to manage effectively for waterfowl and other migratory birds. But, we don’t really have a timeline for the repair just yet.”
On nearby Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge, fall programs have been ongoing.
The wildlife drive is a great place to take the family, especially in the early evenings just before dark. A free Red Wolf Howling is scheduled on Saturday, Oct. 15, at 6 p.m. to celebrate Wolf Awareness and National Wildlife Refuge Weeks. The final Red Wolf Howling for 2011 is scheduled for Dec. 10.
One final tram tour will be offered on Alligator River, as well. It will begin at 9 a.m. on Dec. 10. The meeting location for the tram tour and howlings is Creef Cut Trailhead at the intersection of Milltail Road and U.S. Highway 64.
