Drivers Advised to Avoid Tri-Villages in Northern Hatteras Island …WITH VIDEO

Per a Friday morning update from the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT), standing saltwater remains on the road in the tri-villages area of Waves, Salvo and Rodanthe. As such, drivers should avoid the area until the water recedes, and monitor DriveNC.gov or call 511 for road condition updates, per the NCDOT.

As of Friday morning at 10 a.m., standing water was reported at multiple spots along N.C. Highway 12 in northern Avon and the tri-villages, as well as on many residential side streets on the soundside. Motorists who must be on the roads should use extreme caution and drive slowly, as saltwater can damage or ruin a vehicle.

Roughly 2-4 feet of soundside inundation impacted northern Hatteras Island late Thursday night and early Friday morning, as the backside of Tropical Storm Michael headed northeast into the Atlantic Ocean. Per the National Weather Service, Michael is now extratropical and is quickly moving away from land, and winds and water levels will continue to diminish throughout the day.
