Highlights from the October 1 BOC Meeting

The Dare County Board of Commissioners (BOC) covered a number of Outer Banks-related issues and achievements at their October 15 meeting in Manteo.

Topics which pertained to the island and / or the local community included the following.  

Board Approves Zoning Amendments to Facilitate Year-Round Housing

Following a public hearing at which 10 citizens spoke about the need for year-round  workforce housing, the Board of Commissioners approved proposed zoning amendments involving minimum lot sizes for duplex structures, multi-family dwelling density, accessory dwelling units and cluster lots that were developed to facilitate the development of year-round residential structures in specific zoning districts in unincorporated Dare County.  Planning Director Donna Creef and the Planning Board received a round of applause for their efforts in bringing forward creative ways that will provide flexibility to allow the private sector to increase housing opportunities for year-round residents.

Funding for Chicamacomico Historical Association

The Board approved a Restricted Fund spending request from the Outer Banks Visitors Bureau awarding $70,000 for a Natural, Historic & Cultural Grant to the Chicamacomico Historical Association to purchase land adjacent to the Chicamacomico Lifesaving Station.  

Report on the Dare County Center Nutrition Program

Commissioner Rob Ross provided a report on the Dare County Center Nutrition Program that provides hot meals on a daily basis to older adults in our community, which in some cases is the only regular, nutritious meal that some receive.  Commissioner Ross read a letter from the Dare County Center Director thanking the Board of Commissioners for their support of the Nutrition Program. He also shared comments from participants in the program expressing their gratitude for the healthy meals they receive.

October Proclaimed Long-Term Care Residents’ Rights Month

Commissioner Jim Tobin, on behalf of the Community Advisory Committee, presented a proclamation establishing October 2018 as National Long-Term Care Residents’ Rights Month.  It was noted that the Community Advisory Committee members serve as advocates for the residents of long-term care facilities in Dare County. Commissioner Tobin serves as Chairman of the local committee and encouraged citizens to visit the long-term care facilities in Dare County and spend time with the residents.
