Coastal Storm Expected to Affect Outer Banks on Friday

A non-tropical storm bringing strong thunderstorms, heavy rains, and gusty winds is forecast to affect Hatteras and Ocracoke islands on Friday and Friday night, per a Thursday afternoon briefing from the National Weather Service Newport / Morehead City office.

Periods of moderate to heavy rain are likely on Friday and Friday night, with thunderstorms and the possibility of isolated tornadoes also in the forecast.

One to two inches of rain are expected during the storm, with the highest amounts of rain along the coast of the Outer Banks. Gusty southeast winds will also develop on Friday, and will diminish by Saturday. Wind gusts up to approximately 40 mph will be possible along the coastline through Friday night.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) advised on Thursday that the weather may impact Hatteras and Ocracoke island ferry operations. Depending on conditions for Friday afternoon and evening, some ferry runs may be delayed or cancelled for the safety of passengers and ferry crews.
