CHSS Homecoming includes parade, game, and court presentation
On a warm autumn afternoon, Cape Hatteras Secondary School of Coastal Studies kicked off its annual Homecoming celebration with a parade from the school down the Back Road to Crossover Road and down Highway 12 back to the campus.
Spectators lined the route, cheering on the Hurricanes football team, the cheerleaders, the marching band, and school dignitaries, including the principals of both the elementary school and the high school, the PTA student of the month, and teacher of the year Erin Delmonte.
Girls’ basketball coach and CHSS alumnae, Kelly Forsyth, led the parade with a line of motorcycles, followed by Conner’s Supermarket’s jeeps, the Cape Hatteras Secondary School Marching Band, and fire trucks from Chicamacomico, Buxton, Frisco, Hatteras, and Avon, which carried the middle and high school sports teams.
There were also floats, sponsored by four high school classes, the Munchkin Academy, and the Hatteras Island Cancer Foundation.
After the parade, some folks opted for a chili dinner, sponsored by Buxton United Methodist Church, or a tailgate party, sponsored by the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
During halftime of the game against the Mattamuskeet Lakers, the school’s marching band and varsity cheerleaders entertained.
After the game, the homecoming court was presented in the gymnasium.
Crowned king and queen were Eric Beierlein and Molly Cleaver, both seniors. Runners-up were seniors Grey McDowell and Kelsey Waterfield.
The court included:
Seniors Amber Younce, Isaac Copes, Harley Morris and Caitie Parsons.
Juniors Foster Mattingly, Victoria Gaskins, Nicole Naughton, Skylr Peele, Darryl Hill, and Jeffrey Mueller.
Sophomores Evan Haas, Ethan Kostich, Taylor Randall, and Raelin Morris.
Freshmen Erin Randall and Andrew Gray.
The bleachers were packed as the Cape Hatteras Hurricanes fought valiantly against the Lakers, especially in a more exciting second half, but lost the game 22-12.
