A guide to dining out during the holidays

The weather is much cooler, the days are getting shorter, and there are many fewer visitors on Hatteras and Ocracoke.

Many of the islands’ restaurants have already closed and others will be closing shortly.

However, visiting during the holidays is much more popular with tourists than it once was. Spending Thanksgiving or Christmas by the ocean when there is less hustle and bustle is appealing to many. And there are some restaurants and stores open to help you feed the crew.

So if you are planning a visit to the islands this holiday season, we have some information for you if you don’t want to be fixing all of your meals yourself while you are on vacation.

The Island Free Press sent emails to the islands’ eateries, asking about their plans for the holidays. We heard back from some of them and share that information with you.

RODANTHE

Marilyn’s Deli. Located inside of Island Convenience store on Highway 12.  252-987-2239.   Serving breakfast and lunch daily. On Thanksgiving Day, the store will be open from 6 a.m. until 3 p.m.   Deli will be serving breakfast from 7 until 10 a.m. Pre-baked pies for the Thanksgiving holiday and a few extra for those who didn’t pre-book.   Pies include pumpkin, $9.99;  apple, blueberry, peach and pecan, $12.99;  coconut cake, $19.99.  Call to pre-order.

AVON

Bros Sandwich Shack. Food Lion Shopping Plaza. 252-995-9595. Serving burgers, sandwiches, daily specials. Open seven days a week from 11 a.m. – 9 p.m. Will be closed Thanksgiving Day, closing at 5 p.m. Christmas Eve, and closed Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.

Gidget’s Pizza and Pasta.   Food Lion Plaza Shopping Center. 252-995-3109. Serving pizza, pasta, calzones, subs, and paninis. In November, Gidget’s will be closed Thanksgiving Day but open 11 a.m. – 9 p.m. Tuesday – Saturday otherwise. In December, the restaurant is also open Tuesday – Saturday from 11 a.m. until 9 p.m. but will be closed for Christmas from Dec. 20-28 and Jan. 1.

Turner’s High Moon Bar. 40618 Highway Hwy. 12. 252-995-6666. Bar menu and drinks. During November and December, the Bloody Mary Bar from noon till 6 p.m. Also open Monday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday from 5 p.m. until last call. Open all of Thanksgiving week, but closed Dec. 23-30. Live music Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, starting at 9 p.m.

BUXTON

Angelo’s . Highway 12 in Buxton. 252-995-6364.  Pizza, subs, calzones, and dinners, including spaghetti, lasagna, chicken and eggplant parmesan, manicotti, and fried shrimp and fried chicken.  Open Monday through Saturday 11 a.m. until 9 p.m. and noon until 8 p.m. on Sunday. Closed Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day and closing early on Christmas Eve.

Fatty’s Eatery.   Highway 12 in Buxton. 252-995-FATT. Open daily from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m.  Closed Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day.

Café Pamlico at The Inn on Pamlico Sound.   252-995-7030. 49684 Highway 12 in  Buxton. Cafe Pamlico is open for dinner Wednesday through Sunday from 5  until 9 p.m. and for breakfast daily from 8 until 10 a.m. Special winter menu is available for dinner with nightly specials, such as prime rib on Wednesday and oysters on Friday.  Click here to see the menu. The Café will offer periodic live music. Call to check. Café Pamlico will also be open on New Year’s Eve with a menu to be announced later. Please call for more information and reservations.

Conner’s Supermarket.  Highway 12.  Open 8 a.m. until 9 p.m. 252-995-5711. Although this is not a restaurant, we’ve included it here because you can purchase a ready-to-heat-and-eat Thanksgiving dinner with the trimmings, including s a 10-12 pound fully cooked roast turkey, turkey gravy, mashed potatoes, stuffing, and cranberry relish. You can pick up the dinner at the store on Wednesday or before noon on Thursday. Limited number are available so call to place an order.

Also available each day are fresh salads, subs, and sandwiches, along with a hot daily  special.

HATTERAS

Hatteras Sol Deli & Cafe. Stowe on 12 shops on Highway 12. 252-986-1414. Open Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. through November. Offering ready-to-bake Thanksgiving sides, including homemade bread and desserts. Call for more information on sides. Order ahead by Sunday, Nov. 22, for pickup on Wednesday, Nov. 25. Call for days open in December.

OCRACOKE

Gaffer’s Sports Pub: 1050 Irvin Garrish Highway. 252-928-3456. Open 365 days. Breakfast served until noon.  Also serving lunch, dinner, and late night menu. Serving Thanksgiving buffet from noon until 4 p.m. Open Christmas Eve and Christmas Day with limited hours.   Take-out available. Live music every weekend and Bloody Mary bar every Saturday and Sunday.
