A conversation with outgoing Hatteras commissioner Allen Burrus ….WITH VIDEO
Allen Burrus, who just retired as Hatteras Island’s representative to the Dare County Board of Commissioners, was the guest on the Nov. 20 edition of “To the Point,” a Radio Hatteras interview show, hosted by Irene Nolan, editor of The Island Free Press.
After 10 years on the county commission, Burrus decided not to run for re-election for health reasons. He was has been replaced in the District 4 seat by Danny Couch of Buxton, who ran unopposed in last month’s general election.
Burrus was appointed commissioner in 2006 to fill the unexpired term of Joseph “Mac” Midgett of Rodanthe. He was then elected to the seat in 2008 and re-elected in 2012. Before serving on the Board of Commissioners, Burrus spent 12 years as the Hatteras representative on the Dare County Board of Education.
This is Burrus’ “exit” interview, so to speak, in which he reflects on where Hatteras Island has been and where it should be headed and the accomplishments of the board in the past decade.
He says he is proudest of the work that the board has done to improve substance abuse prevention and treatment in the county. Also at the top of his list are getting ground broken for the Bonner Bridge replacement and other Highway 12 projects on northern Hatteras.
He also addresses the need for a navigable, reliable channel in Hatteras Inlet and Dare County Emergency Management, including whether Hatteras should have a representative on the county’s Control Board and issues of evacuation and re-entry.
