Get in the spirit with OBXmas Weekend on Hatteras Island
Plan now for a full-filled pre-Christmas weekend on Hatteras Island.
On the second weekend in December, special events are planned for the island.
On Friday, Dec. 12, a Holiday Promenade in Rodanthe, Waves and Salvo starts the weekend. On Saturday, the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse opens for free climbing, the Hatteras Village Christmas Parade starts at 2 p.m., and the Graveyard of The Atlantic Museum holds a festive open house from noon to 5 p.m.
The Friday Promenade in Rodanthe, Waves and Salvo, takes place from 4 to 6 p.m. along the sidewalk in the three villages.
Along the sidewalk, villagers and businesses will be serving hot drinks and other goodies. Walk, jog, ride a bike, skate along the sidewalk. Bring flashlights and/or wear lights to light the way and illuminate the sidewalk.
At 4 p.m. at the Rodanthe-Waves-Salvo Community Building, lights for bikes of young bike riders will be installed. School resource officer and Dare Sheriff’s deputy Aaron Felton is bringing a supply of lights for the front and back of bikes and will help install the lights.
Businesses in the three villages will be open for shopping before and during the promenade. The Rodanthe Thrift Shop will hold its famous half-price sale from 2 to 6 p.m. Stop by Kitty Hawk Kites (kittyhawk.com) which is offering discounts on purchases. North Beach Campground and Island Convenience are open.
Two art galleries will be open: Michael Halminski and Pea Island Gallery.
After the promenade, dine with Good Winds Restaurant or Stingwrays. Waves Market & Deli is also open.
For those who coming from out-of-town, Watermen’s Retreat (watermensretreat.com, (252) 987-6060) has a very attractive winter rate for a two-bedroom condominium and Waves Village (wavesvillage.com, (252) 305-2629) is offering a two-night special rate on a three-bedroom condominium unit.
For camping enthusiasts, Camp Hatteras (camphatteras.com, (252) 987-2777) is offering a 15 percent discount and Cape Hatteras KOA (capehatteraskoa.com, 1-800-562-5368) is featuring substantially reduced winter rates.

On Saturday of Hatteras Island’s OBXmas Weekend, the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse will be open for climbing…for free.
The Outer Banks Lighthouse Society in cooperation with the National Park Service will open the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse for climbing from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Make the climb to see Hatteras Island from atop the lighthouse.
Hatteras Islanders love a parade and Saturday afternoon, Dec. 13, the Hatteras Village Christmas Parade kicks off at 2 p.m.
The parade starts at Teach’s Lair Marina and continues up Highway 12 to the Hatterasman Drive-In. Parade goers park along the route and cheer on the floats, fire trucks, horses, emergency and Coast Guard vehicles, bands and Santa Claus.
After the parade, the Hatteras Village Civic Association invites everyone for cookies and cocoa at the Hatteras Village Community Building for the announcement of winners.
Bracketing the parade is the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum’s Christmas Open House that runs from noon to 5 p.m. The museum will be festooned with holiday decorations. Volunteers offer special activities for children, island musicians provide music and all can enjoy sumptuous treat tables.
