Hatteras Village Christmas Parade postponed until Dec. 21
The annual Hatteras Village Christmas Parade, one of the most anticipated of holiday events on the island, has been postponed by the weather forecast.
This year’s parade, scheduled for tomorrow, will be on Saturday, Dec. 21, starting at 2 p.m. in Hatteras village.
“It was a tough decision,” said Dennis Robinson, president of the Hatteras Village Civic Association, sponsor of the parade.
However, he said there is an 80 percent chance of rain tomorrow by parade time. In addition, the forecast calls for winds from the southeast, gusting to 40 mph.
Three marching bands – from Cape Hatteras Secondary School and Manteo and First Flight high schools – had already cancelled.
The rain date had already been set for Dec. 21.
The parade begins at Teach’s Lair Marina near the ferry docks and winds its way along Highway 12 to the Hatterasman Drive-In.
After the parade, there will be cookies and hot chocolate at the Hatteras Community Building, where the winning floats are announced.
Most folks just park along the highway and watch from the backs of their vehicles or walk up and down the road chatting with friends. Youngsters bring bags to scoop up the treats that are thrown off the floats.
Anyone with questions about the postponement can call Robinson at dennisr@midgettrealty.com.
