Coastal Flood Advisory, Wind Advisory in effect for the Outer Banks on Friday
A Coastal Flood Advisory, High Surf Advisory, and Wind Advisory are in effect for the Outer Banks as a cold front crosses eastern North Carolina on Friday morning, February 18, per a recent update from the National Weather Service.
Southwest winds of 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 45 mph are expected starting early Friday morning before the wind switches to the northeast in the late afternoon. The Wind Advisory is in effect from 1:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. on Friday for Hatteras and Ocracoke Islands.
For the High Surf Advisory, large breaking waves of 6 to 9 feet are expected in the surf zone, especially for Ocracoke Island and southern Hatteras Island. For the Coastal Flood Advisory, 1 to 2 feet of soundside inundation above ground level is possible in low-lying areas near the Pamlico Sound, primarily from Buxton to Duck. Both advisories are in effect until early Friday afternoon, and N.C. Highway 12 may be impacted by minor flooding and/or standing water.
A Gale Warning is also in effect from midnight until noon on Friday due to hazardous seas which could capsize or damage vessels and reduce visibility. Mariners should alter plans to avoid these hazardous conditions, and/or secure their vessel for severe conditions.
