Coastal flooding possible on Christmas; High Wind Warning issued for Hatteras and Ocracoke Islands
A strong cold front is expected to impact the Outer Banks late Christmas Eve into Christmas Day, with strong winds likely to produce coastal flooding and possible ocean overwash, per a Wednesday morning update from the National Weather Service Newport / Morehead City Office.
A High Wind Warning has been issued for Hatteras and Ocracoke islands from 4:00 p.m. on Thursday until 4:00 a.m. on Friday. South winds of 35 to 45 mph with gusts up to 55 mph are expected, and damaging winds could blow down trees and power lines.
Strong southerly winds have the highest chance of producing coastal flooding across inland portions of the Pungo River, eastern Pamlico River, northern Pamlico Sound, Roanoke Sound, and Croatan Sound After the cold front passes and winds turn to the southwest, the threat of coastal flooding will shift to the eastern Pamlico Sound along the Outer Banks.
Ocean overwash is possible for vulnerable portions of N.C. Highway 12 on Ocracoke Island, with strong onshore flow and 10 to 15 ft. seas.
If travel is required on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day, allow extra time as some roads may be impacted. Do not drive around barricades or through water of unknown depth, and take necessary actions to protect flood-prone property.
A Gale Warning is also in effect from 10:00 a.m. on Thursday until 1:00 p.m. on Friday, with max offshore wave heights of 12 to 22 feet. Mariners should alter plans to avoid hazardous conditions. Remain in port, seek safe harbor, alter course, and/or secure any vessels as needed.
