Cold temperatures with wind chills in the teens possible through Sunday
Temperatures will struggle to get above freezing this weekend across eastern North Carolina, with strong gusty winds resulting in wind chills in the 10s and 20s along the Outer Banks, per an update from the National Weather Service Newport/Morehead City office.
Wind chills are forecasted to be in the 20s during the day on Saturday, and in the low 10s on Saturday night. Cold temperatures and strong winds will continue on Sunday, with air temperatures remaining in the 30s throughout the day.
A Small Craft Advisory is in effect until 10 a.m. on Sunday due to northwest winds of 15 to 25 knots, with gusts up to 30 knots, and rough waters expected.
The public is advised to protect outdoor pets and sensitive vegetation as needed, and take precautionary steps to protect pipes from freezing. As temperatures drop, keeping a slow flow of water in faucets may help keep uninsulated pipes from freezing.
Much warmer weather is expected next week, with a few days in the 60s and 70s.
