Efforts underway to remove vessel that was beached near Hatteras on Sunday
Efforts are underway to remove a vessel that was beached just north of Hatteras on Sunday afternoon, June 18.
“[The] Cape Hatteras National Seashore (CHNS) is in the process of evaluating a work plan and issuing a Special Use Permit for vessel removal activities by a contractor,” stated Michael Barber, Public Affairs Specialist for the CHNS, in a Tuesday update.
During the early evening hours on Sunday, a 28-foot vessel named the Carol-ina grounded on the beach near the northeastern entrance to Hatteras village.
On Monday, June 19, a backhoe and crane were used to dislodge the vessel from the water, and to move it further up the beach and away from the ocean.
The vessel remained near the dune line just north of Hatteras as of midday on Tuesday. There were no reported injuries to the four people who were on board the vessel when it came to shore.
