Heat Advisory continues on Saturday; High risk of rip currents for southern Hatteras Island, Ocracoke
A combination of very warm temperatures and high humidity will continue to result in dangerous heat index values on Saturday, per an update from the National Weather Service Newport/Morehead City office.
A Heat Advisory has been issued until Saturday at 7 p.m. The intense heat and humidity will significantly increase the potential for heat-related illnesses, particularly for those working or participating in outdoor activities.
Minimum heat indices of 100 degrees are expected on Saturday, with a heat index of up to 105 forecasted on Hatteras and Ocracoke Islands. Temperatures will be in the mid-to-high 80s on Saturday.
A high risk of rip currents is also in effect for Hatteras Island beaches from Cape Hatteras to Hatteras village, as well as Ocracoke Island beaches. A moderate risk of rip currents is forecast for Buxton through the northern Outer Banks.
Lifeguarded beaches are available along the Cape Hatteras National Seashore at the following locations:
- Coquina Beach Access (Bodie Island)
- Located across from the Bodie Island Lighthouse
- Rodanthe Beach Access (Hatteras Island)
- 23731 N.C. Highway 12, Rodanthe
- Cape Hatteras Lighthouse Beach Access (Hatteras Island)
- Adjacent to the old Cape Hatteras Lighthouse site
- Frisco Beach Access (Hatteras Island)
- Located just south of Frisco Village
- Ocracoke Beach Access (Ocracoke Island)
- 5 miles south of the Ocracoke Campground
The public should check surf and swimming conditions before heading to the beach, and the daily beach forecast at www.weather.gov/beach/mhx includes rip current risk levels, and information about other hazards along the beach. In addition, visitors are encouraged to sign up for text alerts from Dare County, ocean rescue agencies, and the National Weather Service by texting “OBXBeachConditions” to 77295.
