High Surf Advisory, Coastal Flood Advisory in effect until Friday night
A High Surf Advisory and Coastal Flood Advisory are in effect for Hatteras and Ocracoke Islands through 10 p.m. on Friday night, per an update from the National Weather Service.
For the High Surf Advisory, large breaking waves of 5 to 8 feet are expected in the surf zone, and ocean overwash is possible in vulnerable areas of N.C. Highway 12, especially around the times of high tide. For the Coastal Flood Advisory, 1 to 2 feet of inundation above ground level is expected in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways.
Overwash was reported on N.C. Highway 12 on northern Ocracoke Island following Friday morning’s high tide at approximately 7:00 a.m., but the road is open and Hatteras-Ocracoke ferry service is running as scheduled.
N.C. Highway 12 remained clear on Hatteras Island on Friday morning, although additional overwash is possible. The next high tide is approximately 7:15 p.m.
