High Winds and Sand Causing Travel Issues on N.C. Highway 12
Strong north winds in the past several days have led to intermittent closures of N.C. Highway 12 north of Rodanthe, and close to Oregon Inlet. As of 7:45 a.m. on Wednesday, this section of the road remained open, but travelers are advised to use caution throughout the area from the S-Curves to the inlet, and to watch for piles of sand that may remain on the highway.
The N.C. Department of Transportation also advised that delays are possible in the area due to the narrowed roadway and ongoing work to remove the sand.
A Gale Warning remains in effect until 10 a.m. on Wednesday, when winds are forecasted to diminish and eventually switch to the southwest.
