Kirk’s impacts will linger into Tuesday, distant Milton may affect the Outer Banks later this week
As the remnants of Hurricane Kirk move further out to sea, attention along the Outer Banks will turn to Hurricane Milton over the next few days.
Milton is forecast to pass well south of Hatteras and Ocracoke Islands after cutting across Florida, but the storm will likely produce coastal and marine impacts, according to a Monday evening update from the National Weather Service (NWS) Newport/Morehead City office.
Swell from the remnants of Kirk will continue to affect the Outer Banks through Tuesday, while impacts from Hurricane Milton are expected Thursday through Saturday.
Beach erosion and ocean overwash may affect vulnerable areas along the Outer Banks, and specifically areas where overwash has been a repeated issue for the past weeks, (such as northern Ocracoke Island, northern Buxton, Rodanthe, and Pea Island.)
Minor ocean overwash was reported on N.C. Highway 12 in northern Buxton on Monday around the 10:45 a.m. high tide, and additional overwash in the northern Buxton area is possible Tuesday as well, particularly around high tide at 11:30 a.m.
Minor coastal flooding is also possible for vulnerable areas susceptible to flooding with northeast winds, particularly Thursday through Saturday.
Dangerous rip currents and rough surf are expected to continue into the weekend. A High Surf Advisory remains in effect until midnight due to large breaking waves of 5 to 8 feet in the surf zone.
