Low-Income energy assistance available for Dare County residents beginning Dec. 1

Share post:

The Low Income Energy Assistance Program (LEAP) will be available for Dare County residents who meet the criteria beginning on December 1, 2023.

LIEAP helps eligible families with their primary heating expense by providing a one-time annual payment directly to their heating vendor, such as a power, gas, or fuel oil company.

Between Dec. 1 and Dec. 31, households in Dare County containing a person aged 60 or older, or someone receiving disability benefits and services through the NC Division of Aging and Adult Services, can apply for help covering the cost of heating their homes. All other households can apply between Jan. 1 and March 31, or until funds are exhausted.

Households that meet the following criteria may be eligible:

  • Have at least one U.S. citizen or non-citizen who meets the eligibility criteria.
  • Meet an income test.
  • Have reserves at or below $2,250.
  • Be responsible for its heating costs.

Dare County households who want to apply for energy assistance can only do so in person at the Dare County Department of Health & Human Services’ Division of Social Services office locations in Manteo and Frisco.
