More than 3 inches of rainfall recorded in Hatteras, Ocracoke over 24 hours
Widespread rainfall due to a low pressure system resulted in more than 3 inches of rain on Hatteras and Ocracoke islands in the past 24 hours, per a Wednesday morning update from the National Weather Service Newport / Morehead City office.
Standing water was reported on multiple portions of N.C. Highway 12 on Tuesday night and Wednesday morning. Though passable throughout, travelers are advised to use caution and to drive slowly through any flooded roadways.
The low pressure system will slowly lift away from the coast and into Western V.A. and W.V. overnight. Most of the showers and thunderstorms are expected to dissipate by Wednesday evening, however, additional precipitation is still possible throughout the day and evening.
The Outer Banks and the N.C. coastal region will finally begin to dry out by Friday and the weekend, with a return to warm and humid conditions next week.
