N.C. Highway 12 conditions have improved; Another winter storm possible later this week
Soundside flooding has receded on N.C. Highway 12 and the roadway is open and passable throughout Hatteras and Ocracoke Islands, per a Tuesday morning update from the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT).
“Things are looking a lot better on NC12 today,” stated the 7:30 a.m. social media update. “Soundside flooding has receded, with only a few areas of standing water remaining. The road is open and passable, but continue to slow down and drive with caution through the areas of sand and standing water.”
Ferry operations from Hatteras and Ocracoke have also resumed as of Tuesday morning.
Another winter storm is possible later this week, starting on late Thursday night, per an update from the National Weather Service Newport/Morehead City office.
There is the potential for severe icing across portions of Eastern N.C. from late Thursday until Friday, however, the Outer Banks is likely to see rain instead of sleet, ice, or snow. High northeast winds are also forecast for Friday, and the possible impacts will become clearer in the next several days, per the NWS.
