North Carolina Appeals Federal Seismic Testing Decision That Could Lead to Oil Drilling
On Wednesday, August 26, Governor Roy Cooper announced that North Carolina will continue to fight against seismic testing along the state’s coast. The State of North Carolina has filed an appeal of the decision by the U.S. Secretary of Commerce to override the state’s objection to WesternGeco’s plan for offshore seismic testing.
“North Carolina has been clear, we do not want seismic testing in our coastal waters, or the damage from offshore drilling that could follow,” said Governor Cooper. “The studies of our waters show little prospect for drilling, and the environmental damage to our coast could be irreparable if seismic testing goes forward.”
The complaint was filed in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of North Carolina, Northern Division to appeal the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) June 2020 decision to override North Carolina’s objection to the consistency certification under the Coastal Zone Management Act. In June of 2019, the Department of Environmental Quality’s Division of Coastal Management objected to WesternGeco’s proposal to conduct a Geological and Geophysical (Seismic) survey off the North Carolina coast.
“We will continue to take all necessary actions to protect our coastal resources and economy,” said DEQ Secretary Michael S. Regan. “These destructive activities are not welcome off the North Carolina coastline. We support the communities along our coast who have vehemently opposed seismic testing that would lead to offshore drilling.”
In 2019, local government leaders signed a resolution to oppose seismic testing and the offshore drilling that could follow. Coastal leaders also expressed their concerns about the impacts of offshore drilling on the state’s coastal economy during a roundtable with Governor Cooper in September of 2019.
The North Carolina Department of Justice is representing the state in this matter.
Documents related to the case can be found on the DCM website.
It interests me why so many people on the Outer Banks support a president who wants to drill in their waters.
Ditto. This guy would set fire to his mother’s house if he thought it makes him a buck (and/or in this case his industry friends -same thing). It’s been like that since he started out in life. For me this is not a new observation. I’ve known it all along having grown up in the NY area exactly around the time that he started his con-man career (late 60s / early 70s). He’s a 2-bit, sleazy con-man and that’s all he’s ever been. Where I grew up around NY, this was just common knowledge.
This is why so many people initially found his candidacy to be such a joke. Because they knew this about him.
Unfortunately, much of the country had no idea and was completely hoodwinked by the 2-bit sleazy con-man who always has an answer for who you need to blame for your problems – “democrats” and “brown people”. And while many have seen through this charade by now, unfortunately many “suckers born every minute” continue to take the bait.
This guy is a joke. Caustic poison. It’s always been that way with him. Do some real research on the guy’s history and you’ll see it. Everything he touches turns to sh**izzle, which he then sets on fire and runs away with whatever cash bags he can grab. He is the worst of what humans are.
If only much of the country was as enlightened as you Joe. Clearly cities have been thriving under Democrat leadership for decades… You’re implying that anyone who votes for Trump isn’t smart while clearly failing to take in account of why they’re voting for Trump and trying to understand their perspective. Your caustic words will only aide in deepening the already polarized political atmosphere. Didn’t Michele Obama always “when they go low, we go high?”
Mr. Bloomstrom, all due respect, lots of “smart” people get duped by con-men. If a con-man can only dupe “dumb” people, then he’s not very good at it.
And to imply that what is happening right now in “cities” is from “democratic leadership” is bizarre. As if they’re their own little islands disconnected from the larger global, corporate economy. The Don is currently running as if someone else is presiding over this mess. The message is “yes, I am currently president and there are multiple crises, so if you want to be saved from the crises, then you should ask for more of the same.” It is, frankly, bizarre.
And trust me. I understand the “perspective.” I come from a whole family full of it. It is fear, and yes – you know what? A lack of understanding of what is actually going on. The bizarre shhhhtuff I hear from people who are behind this guy is surreal. And he does it on purpose. Do you know why? Because he’s a con-man.
My comment regarding Democrat cities isn’t only from the context of the current protests, although it only further proves my point. Baltimore, Chicago, St. Louis, L.A. have all had decades of continuous democratic leadership and have consistently been the most dangerous cities in the country. I wouldn’t blame the federal government for a city’s problems when the city continues to do the same thing for decades. Under that argument, all cities would be as dangerous as those since they’re all connected to the “larger global, corporate economy.” I’m from the rust belt which has been blue since FDR. In 2016, they went red with an overall consensus that the Democrats have continually failed to look out for their best interests. “A lack of understanding” is happening on both sides of the political spectrum.
1 or 2 positions doesn’t cancel the rest of the good our President has accomplished. Don’t believe everything you read because the headlines are misleading and are baiting you on purpose. Do your own research and actually read the documents and facts – not what headlines bait you into!
Remember the commercial – its on the internet, so it must be real, right?
” the headlines are misleading and are baiting you on purpose. Do your own research and actually read the documents and facts – not what headlines bait you into!”
Holy cow, you are so backwards it isn’t funny. He is a CON-MAN. Through and through, and you post makes you the mark.
He has accomplished nothing other than making one disaster after another – and he continues to while blaming it on everyone else. THIS IS HIS M.O.. (And if you want to say economy, then I’ll quote you: “Do your own research and actually read the documents and facts – not what headlines bait you into!” Nothing dramatic happened with the economy starting in ’17. All the trends remained as they were. There’s been a little bit of extra hot air in the markets – b/c investors know that the con-man shyster will take care of shyster business people like himself. And none of that does squat for normal people.
I think the actions by the president, the things he posts on twitter, and the things he says are pretty real. Also going and reading a bunch of far right websites and documents that come directly from the white house and president is completely biased as well. Does that count as doing your own research? This country has been a dumpster fire since this man has been president because he does not have interest in settling the social unrest and did a horrible job in preventing and acting on COVID. He will do anything to make a buck and that includes drilling in the waters off the coast of the Outer Banks which will threaten every facet that makes that place great. Money, greed, and the economy over the environment is his motto.
Of course, in addition to make a buck, we should add the insane, medication-worthy levels of narcissism. The wacko would actually sell his soul to up his TV “ratings” and have people kowtow to him. He is seriously mentally ill. As I’ve said, I’ve know this about him my whole life. He’d trade money for worship because he knows he can keep lawyers around to bail him out of bankruptcy. This has happened many times over while part of the “deal” is to screw over common working folks.
