Ocean overwash reported on Ocracoke; High Surf Advisory in effect until Friday morning
Ocean overwash was reported on northern Ocracoke Island following Thursday’s approximate 6:00 a.m. high tide. Minor ocean overwash was also reported in north Buxton and Pea Island.
N.C. Highway 12 is open throughout Hatteras and Ocracoke Islands, and the Hatteras-Ocracoke ferry is running as scheduled.
A High Surf Advisory has been issued for the Outer Banks until Friday at 8:00 a.m. Large breaking waves of 6 to 10 feet are expected in the surf zone, which could result in localized beach erosion and additional ocean overwash, particularly for beaches north of Cape Hatteras in Buxton.
Ocean overwash is most likely around high tide, and the next high tides for Hatteras and Ocracoke Islands are approximately 6:15 p.m. on Thursday and 6:45 a.m. on Friday.
Minimal soundside water level rises are expected over the next several days at this time.
