Ocracoke Express passenger ferry resumes service
The Ocracoke Express passenger ferry resumed operations on Wednesday afternoon, August 3, after service was suspended due to a mechanical issue that occurred on July 27.
“Great news! The Ocracoke Express passenger ferry will be going back in service TODAY with the 1 p.m. departure from Hatteras!” stated the North Carolina Ferry System in an online update. “We look forward to seeing you on board soon!”
The Ocracoke Express is a seasonal ferry that is available through September 5, 2022. The 70-minute ferry ride transports visitors directly to Ocracoke village, where a free tram service is available for exploring the island.
- Daily departures from Hatteras are at 9:30 a.m., 1:00 p.m., and 4:30 p.m.
- Daily departures from Ocracoke are at 11:00 a.m., 3:00 p.m., and 7:30 p.m.
The fare is $5.00 per person one way, and reservations can be made online at www.ncferry.org, or by calling 1-800-BY-FERRY.
2022 is the fourth season of passenger ferry service between Hatteras and Ocracoke village, and the brand-new Ocracoke Express made its debut on May 17. (In prior years, a passenger ferry from New Jersey was rented and used for the 2019, 2020, and 2021 summer seasons.)
Passenger ferry service is a supplement to the free Hatteras-Ocracoke vehicle ferry, which transports people between Hatteras and the north end of Ocracoke Island year-round.
