Dare County parents overwhelmingly want school officials to leave decisions on mask wearing to them, according to a school division survey released Thursday.

The survey about mask requirements was conducted this week and received over 1,500 parents/guardian responses and 375 staff responses, schools officials said in an email to parents Thursday.

Among parents and guardians:

  • 63.2 % want parental choice
  • 18.8 % Believe all K-12 students and staff should wear masks
  • 18 % Believe all K-8 students and staff should wear masks/9-12 who are unvaccinated should also wear

The staff response on face coverings results were:

  • 18.2% Believe all K-12 students and staff should wear masks
  • 21.4 % Believe all K-8 students and staff should wear masks/9-12 who are unvaccinated should also wear

Comments made on the survey will be delivered to the Dare County Board of Education, which meets at 5 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 5 in a special sessions. Topics to be discussed include:

  • Strategies that should be considered to lower the risk of COVID-19 exposure
  • Cloth face coverings
  • Modified quarantine guidance where students with well-fitting masks on do not have to quarantine
  • Removal of the A, B, and C plans
  • Removal of the following mandates: visitor restrictions, small cohort groupings, directed traffic flow, daily symptom screening and remote learning

The meeting will take place in the gymnasium at First Flight High School. You can also access the live stream via YouTube.
