SOUTHERN SHORES — Phyllis Wise Hooper completed her earthly life of 91 years on June 22, 2020 at her home in Southern Shores. Married to Dwight Hooper for 63 years, she is survived by her four children Betty, Buddy, David, and Mike plus two grandsons, Jamie and David and two great-grandchildren, Ryu and Serenity.
Phyllis was born in Elizabeth City, December 16, 1928, raised in Stumpy Point by Dewey Wise (PopDo) and Josephine Meekins (Granny) and her adored older brother, Kipland. Upon graduating from North Carolina Women’s College in Greensboro, she moved with Dwight to Norfolk/Virginia Beach to raise her family and begin her career. She taught Business Education to disadvantaged adults with the Norfolk Public Schools until retirement. Phyllis and Dwight were always stalwart members of their community and church. They were active in their children’s lives and built two family homes, one in Southern Shores where they lived after retirement, enjoying boating, cruises, travel and life on the water. They always stayed connected to their roots in Stumpy Point and maintained lifelong friendships.
Phyllis was a longstanding contributing member of the United Methodist Church in Kitty Hawk. She was an avid reader and enthusiastic Kitty Hawk library patron. She became an early adapter to online Bridge, playing recreationally with people around the world, as well as meeting socially with a neighborhood bridge group. Phyllis was an immaculate homemaker who loved decorating, cooking, shopping and entertaining. She was a loving mother and grandmother, devoted wife, respected teacher and valued, trusted friend to many. She will be remembered for her kindness, generosity, and interest in helping others.
Her family will celebrate her life in a private service on the anniversary of her marriage.
