Run the Rodanthe Bridge race will be held on April 9, ahead of Community Day event
The first-ever Run the Rodanthe Bridge 5-mile and 5K race, which takes place at the new Jug Handle Bridge, will be held on the morning of April 9, hours before a Community Day event where the public can walk or ride a bike on the new structure.
The race, which benefits the Rodanthe-Waves-Salvo (RWS) Civic Association, is highly anticipated by visitors and residents alike, as the event reached its maximum of 600 entrants in mid-February, creating the need for a waiting list.
Volunteers for the event are still being welcomed, as organizers have many needs from setting up the start/finish area to distributing medals as participants complete the event. A post-race party will be held at the RWS Community Building lot, with music, beer, hot sandwiches, coleslaw, chips, beans, and more. All finishers will receive a Bridge Medal, and registered runners will also receive a souvenir long-sleeved T-shirt.
The schedule for the race per the event organizers is as follows:
- 6:00 a.m. – Set up for sponsors and volunteers begins
- 6:45 a.m. – The event opens for runners
- 7:15 – 7:45 a.m. – Announcements/music
- 7:50 a.m. – National Anthem
- 8:00 a.m. – Race officially starts
The Dare County Community Day, which features a free and open bridge walk for anyone on the Outer Banks, will be held in the afternoon, from 1:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. Parking for the Community Day event will be available at the Rodanthe-Waves-Salvo Community Center and at the Rodanthe beach access parking lot. Parking and access at the north end of the bridge will not be available.
