SBI called in on LeeAnn Fletcher case

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) has joined the investigation into the death of LeeAnn Fletcher, the Kitty Hawk woman who died on July 25, three days after she was found in her home.

In a Sept. 11 email to the Voice, an SBI spokesperson confirmed that the bureau had been requested by District Attorney Andrew Womble to join the investigation on Sept. 9

In the wake of her death, Fletcher’s family and friends have been conducting an aggressive campaign to keep the case on the front burner and to convince law enforcement authorities to bring charges against the individual they believe is responsible for beating her to death.

In a Sept. 11 post on her Facebook page, Trisha Cahoon, who has been spearheading that effort, announced the SBI’s involvement, adding that, “We’re hoping that with the SBI being involved, we will start moving forward.”

Several days ago, on Sept. 8, Womble released a statement saying he is awaiting an official autopsy report from the Virginia Medical Examiner’s office before making a decision about criminal charges, and that he expected that report to be ready within 30 days. The District Attorney noted in that statement that the Medical Examiner is awaiting results of further tests from the Pathology Department at the University of Virginia School of Medicine.
