Severe thunderstorms and dangerous heat possible on Monday, August 7
Severe weather is possible for the Outer Banks on Monday evening, while excessive heat will impact coastal North Carolina throughout the day, per an update from the National Weather Service (NWS) Newport/Morehead City office.
A dangerous combination of heat and humidity is forecast across eastern North Carolina on Monday, with heat index values in the low-to-mid 100s for the Outer Banks.
In addition, scattered thunderstorms are possible starting on Monday evening. Damaging winds, large hail, torrential downpours with localized flooding, and frequent lightning are all slightly possible with the storms.
A Small Craft Advisory is also in effect for the Pamlico Sound starting at 5:00 p.m. on Monday due to southwest winds of 15-25 knots with gusts up to 30 knots, and rough waters expected. Inexperienced mariners, especially those operating smaller vessels, should avoid navigating in hazardous conditions.
