Severe thunderstorms possible Friday afternoon and evening, May 27
Severe thunderstorms will be possible Friday afternoon into the evening, especially west of Highway 17 on mainland North Carolina, per a recent update from the National Weather Service Newport / Morehead City office.
Damaging wind gusts up to 55-65 mph, large hail, and heavy downpours capable of producing localized flooding are the main threats. These weather conditions could impact travel for the beginning of the holiday weekend, and caution is advised. Severe weather is less likely for the N.C. coast on Friday, including Hatteras and Ocracoke Islands
