Severe weather possible on Thursday, August 10
Severe thunderstorms will be possible Thursday afternoon and Thursday evening for all of eastern North Carolina, per a recent update from the National Weather Service Newport/Morehead City office.
Damaging wind gusts up to 65-70 mph are the main threat, and large hail and a few tornadoes are also possible. A high risk of rip currents is also in effect for southern Hatteras Island and Ocracoke Island, south of Cape Point in Buxton.
A Small Craft Advisory is also in effect for the Pamlico Sound until midnight due to southwest winds of 20-25 knots with gusts up to 30 knots, and rough waters expected. Inexperienced mariners, especially those operating smaller vessels, should avoid navigating in hazardous conditions.
