Showers and thunderstorms will continue through the weekend
Showers and thunderstorms will remain in the forecast through the weekend, with up to 3” inches of additional rainfall along the Outer Banks, per an update from the National Weather Service Newport/Morehead City office.
Flash flooding is possible, especially in urban and poor drainage areas that have already received heavy rains over the past several days. A Flood Watch has been issued for eastern North Carolina, except for portions of the Outer Banks from Oregon Inlet to Ocracoke Inlet.
A high risk of rip currents continues on Friday, July 12, for all Outer Banks beaches. A high risk of rip currents means that the surf zone is dangerous for all levels of swimmers, and beachgoers should stay out of the water.
The public should check surf and swimming conditions before heading to the beach, and the daily beach forecast at www.weather.gov/beach/mhx includes rip current risk levels, and information about other hazards along the shoreline. In addition, the public can visit Dare County’s Love The Beach, Respect The Ocean website for current risks and additional info about rip current safety.
