Soundside flooding is receding throughout Hatteras Island, but saltwater remains on N.C. Highway 12
Water levels are receding throughout Hatteras Island as of 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, per multiple reports including the NC Flood Inundation Mapping and Alert Network, although standing saltwater remains on the roadway in multiple locations throughout the island.
Road conditions as of 1:20 p.m. on Tuesday are as follows, per an update from the Dare County Sheriff’s Office:
“Avon: Just north of Avon, on NC12, there are approximately 2 to 4 inches of water on the roadway. It is still passable.
Frisco: In the area of the Frisco Fire Department, there are 2 to 4 inches of water. It is passable.
Hatteras: There is approximately 1 to 2 inches of water on NC 12 in the area of the Frisco Bath House. There are a few areas with 2 to 4 inches of water; Eagle Pass, NC 12, and Hatteras Fire Department. All areas are passable. Please use caution when traveling today.”
N.C. Highway 12 also remains flooded throughout the Tri-Village communities of Rodanthe, Waves, and Salvo, as well as on Pea Island between the Captain Richard Etheridge and Jug Handle Bridges.
Caution is advised throughout Hatteras Island and travel is not recommended unless necessary. Weather conditions will continue to improve, with winds diminishing throughout Tuesday afternoon and evening.
N.C. Highway 12 on northern Ocracoke Island remains closed between the Hatteras-Ocracoke ferry terminal and the National Park Service Pony Pens due to excessive flooding, per an update from the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT). Ferry service between Hatteras and Ocracoke also remains suspended.
