Speed limits increase on Hatteras Island

Speed limits are being increased on N.C. Highway 12 throughout Hatteras Island today, September 15, which includes a seasonal increase from 35 mph to 45 mph within the villages of Rodanthe, Waves, Salvo, Avon and Frisco, and an increase from 45 mph to 55 mph in between the villages of Avon and Buxton, and in between Frisco and Hatteras.

The speed limits on Hatteras Island are seasonally reduced by 10 mph on May 15 to adapt to the increase in summertime traffic. Traditionally, the speed limits increase on or around September 15 due to the reduced number of off-season visitors.

The new, higher speed limits will remain in effect until May 15, 2022.
