Traffic accident reported in Avon on Sunday afternoon, July 17
A traffic accident occurred in Avon near South Beachcomber Drive at approximately 3:30 p.m. on Sunday afternoon. Per multiple reports, an individual was struck by a vehicle on N.C. Highway 12, and after Dare County EMS responded to the accident, they were transported to the hospital by Dare County’s MedFlight.
As of 4:00 p.m., the Dare County Sheriff’s Office, North Carolina State Highway Patrol, and Hatteras Island Rescue Squad were still on the scene of the accident. One lane of traffic was open as of 4:00 p.m., with Sheriff’s Office deputies directing vehicles.
Travelers should expect delays on N.C. Highway 12 in northern Avon through Sunday afternoon. The Island Free Press will post updates as soon as they become available.
Monday Update:
Per the Outer Banks Voice, a 24-year-old Boston man died at Norfolk General Hospital after being struck by a vehicle in Sunday’s accident.
According to a spokesperson for the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, Thomas Christos Koconis was on the east shoulder of the highway with his dog and was heading north when they were both struck by a GMC Sierra pickup truck. Koconis was first airlifted to the Outer Banks Hospital and then to Norfolk General where he succumbed to his injuries. The dog perished at the scene of the accident.
