U.S. Coast Guard assists disabled vessel near Diamond Shoals
On December 18 at approximately 4:30 p.m., U.S. Coast Guard Station Hatteras Inlet received a distress call on Channel 16 from the 21-foot recreational vessel Roe Boat, reporting an engine failure.
The vessel was located northeast of Diamond Shoals, about 40 nautical miles from the station.
A Good Samaritan initially took the vessel in tow, but as weather conditions worsened, the operator realized it was too challenging to continue, and proceeded to drop the tow and leave the disabled vessel on their own.
Within 12 minutes, Station Hatteras Inlet’s crew launched the 47 MLB to assist.
“Upon arriving on scene, the crew of the 47 noted 5-6 ft. seas and 20 knots of wind,” stated Station Hatteras Inlet in an update on the incident. “The two individuals were safely towed around Diamond Shoals and arrived at Village Marina boat ramp around 11:30 p.m. The mariners were then able to remove their vessel from the water and arrange for repairs. Stay safe, everyone, and have a happy holiday season.”
