U.S. Coast Guard responds to overturned vessel off of Ocracoke Inlet
At approximately 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, September 19, the U.S. Coast Guard Station Hatteras Inlet was notified of an overturned vessel approximately eight nautical miles southeast of Ocracoke Inlet.
At 3:45, the station’s 29’ RB-S got underway, while the reporting source, the sailing vessel Argus, continued to update the crew with the position of the overturned vessel. The Argus additionally passed information of the registration number on the side of the vessel to the U.S. Coast Guard Sector North Carolina.
Sector N.C. used this information to locate the owners’ address, and contacted the Hyde County Sheriff’s Department. The sheriff was able to make contact with the owner, and ensured that everyone was safe. Unfortunately, the vessel had slipped its mooring, and began drifting when it ultimately capsized. No injuries were reported in the incident
