Student Guest Column:
2017 - 2018 DECA Chapter Success at Regional Competition


Cape Hatteras Secondary School students traveled to Greenville, North Carolina to compete in North Carolina DECA’s regional competition on November 30th, 2017. As stated on their website, DECA prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs in marketing, finance, hospitality and management in high schools and colleges around the globe. This year, the school club membership was at its highest, with 37 competing members.

With much success, Cape Hatteras had 11 students recognized for exam finalists and performance finalists, some placing in the top 3 in their event. Over half of the club received exam/performance proficiency.

Finalists are stated as below.
  • Retail Merchandising: Evan Cabral was an exam finalist. Tayler Gavetti was an exam finalist, performance finalist and won 2nd place overall.
  • Principles of Marketing: John Contestable was an exam finalist, performance finalist and won 2nd place overall.
  • Quick Serve Restaurant Management: Rodney Brinson was an exam finalist. Savannah Scarborough was an exam finalist and performance finalist.
  • Sports & Entertainment Team Decision Making: The team of Dawson Romanko and Caroline Gray were exam finalists and performance finalists.
  • Entrepreneurship Team Decision Making: The team of Sandra Sanchez and Sam Smith were exam finalists, performance finalists and placed 3rd overall. The team of Enrique Babilonia and Evan Castillo were performance finalists and won 1st place overall.
Proficiency in various categories are still being received.
