Cancer Foundation’s Spring Dance raises almost $6,000  ….WITH SLIDE SHOW

About 150 people who weren’t bothered by a not very spring-like windy and chilly evening turned out for the Hatteras Island Cancer Foundation’s annual Spring Dance on Saturday, April 6, at the Hatteras Village Civic Center.

The 13th annual dance raised about $6,000 to help islanders pay for cancer treatment not covered by insurance.

The dance committee kept the decorations simple and somewhat retro with a theme of black-and-white with splashes of yellow.

All the tables had white table cloths with smaller black ones on top and yellow daisies in the center. The food tables had additional yellow table cloths and had a tall glass vase filled with lemons for a centerpiece. 

Diner-style lights were strung over the dance floor while guests danced to the music of The Main Event of Greenville, N.C., which played everything from beach music to rock ‘n’ roll.

Old pictures from previous dances were turned into black-and-white photos of varying sizes and hung on cork boards on the walls of the Civic Center. Black triangles of paper on all four corners of the photos made them appear as if they were out of an album.  The photos were available for sale for sale $10, $20, or $30, depending on the size.

The 50-50 raffle took in $300 and the winner of $150 donated it back to HICF.
 
The dinner buffet was as spectacular as usual. It was overseen by HICF board member Dee Callahan with contributions from Hatteras restaurants.

The buffet included crab-stuffed mushrooms, oysters Rockefeller, sesame-pepper seared tuna, fried calamari with Cajun Remoulade, baby spinach and fresh strawberry salad, beef brisket by Johnny Conner, chicken Alfredo over penne pasta, fried shrimp, deviled eggs, and various vegetables and desserts.
