Frisco Native American Museum offers summer programs for families
The Frisco Native American Museum & Natural History Center on Highway 12 in Frisco will be offering a number of special programs for children and families this summer. The bird observation room will be used for two programs, and hands-on activities will take place in the “Action Center” and on the nature trail.
The program’s include:
“Explorer’s Fossil Pile.” Enjoy the museum’s nature trail and explore the fossil pile located near the maritime forest pavilion. What looks like a big table filled with sand is actually a treasure-trove from the Aurora Fossil pits. The sand comes from deep sea dredgings and is filled with sharks’ teeth, fossilized shells, and other fossils dating back millions of years. Fun for the entire family. Available daily.
“Birding for Fun.” Ever wondered how birds fly? What is the smallest bird? Why birds sing? Discover the museum’s bird garden and see the “biggest bird house” on the east coast. Join the museum director for a fun-filled experience in an “up-close and personal” look at some of the island’s local birds. The session will provide a great introduction to bird watching and possibly start participants on the path to a rich and rewarding life-long hobby. Every Friday at the museum at 2 p.m. from June 21- August 30.
“Beginning Archaeology.” Learn the “how, where, what, and why” of the original inhabitants of Hatteras Island. Discover the history of Native Americans using authentic artifacts many thousands of years old. Take home a piece of history — a free gift from the museum. Every Friday at the museum at 3 p.m. from June 21- August 30.
“Exploring our Environment.” Interact with the environment through four hands-on activities in the museum “Action Center.” Make a virtual fly over of the coast, predict future coastal changes, carry out two experiments, and see learn how natives used shells and other “gifts” of nature. Available daily beginning June 21.
The museum is open from 10:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday and Monday by appointment only. Activities and workshops included in museum admission of $3 seniors, $5 individual, $15 family.
