GREENVILLE — Mrs. Dorothy Midgett Brannan, 84, passed away Sunday, Feb. 15, 2015.
Thefuneral service will be conducted Wednesday at 11 a.m. in St. JamesUnited Methodist Church. The family will receive friendsimmediately following the service in the church fellowship hall. A private graveside will be held at Pinewood Memorial Park.
Mrs.Brannan was the daughter of the late Nelson H. and Odessa M.Midgett. A native of Waves, she received an associate degree fromLouisburg College and graduated with a B.S. and a M.A. from EastCarolina University. She began a teaching career in Windsor,N.C., where she met her husband, who would become a professor at EastCarolina University for 30 years. Therefore, Mrs. Brannan madeher home in Greenville, where she taught at J. H. Rose High School for30 years. She tried to instill in all students a love forhistory. She thought if people understood history, they would bemore productive and live a good life.
Mrs. Brannan maintainedher membership in the Fair Haven United Methodist Church inWaves. She attended St. James United Methodist Church inGreenville for many years and was a member of St. James UnitedMethodist Women. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, anhonorary teachers organization and was honored by the Civitan Club asthe Citizen of the Year in Education. She was also honored as theDaughters of the American Revolution N.C. History Teacher of the Yearand honored by the City of Greenville and Pitt County as Teacher of theYear.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Brannan was also precededin death by her husband of 40 years, Oscar W. Brannan in 2003 andcousin, Asa Hamilton Gray, IV.
She is survived by cousins,Lennon Hooper and wife, Sharon, Rudolph Gray and wife, Bette, Asa H.Gray III and daughters, Cassie, Caitlyn, and Caroline Gray, and lovingfriend, Susan Gray.
