COLINGTON–Julia Jordan Haywood, 83, died Oct. 2 at The Outer Banks Hospital. Sheis survived by her husband, two sons, one daughter, and her mother whowill be 103 this month.
Julia, born in Buffalo City, was owner andoperator of Jennifer Alterations. She was named Dare County’s Citizenof the Year by the Dare County Board of Commissioners in July 2014 forthe many years of volunteer service that she unselfishly gave. Threeyears ago the Outer Banks Woman’s Club established the Julia HaywoodScholarship to honor her. She was co-chairman of the Dare County AngelGift Project.
She loved helping others but nothing was as important to her as her family.
HenryDean Haywood and Julia would have celebrated 66 years of marriage inDecember. Surviving are children, Phil Ray Haywood (Connie) ofColington, Robert Clayton “Bobby” Haywood (Carol) of Manteo, TerryHaywood Beasley of Currituck, and David Scott Haywood (Penny) ofColington. Her mother, Amy Twiford Jordan, lives in Chesapeake, Va. Shewas preceded in death by her daughter, Marla Dean Haywood; her father,Henry Jordan; and sister, Louise Jordan Lawrence.
She issurvived by a sister, Sandy Jordan Holloman (Frank) of Florida; abrother, Henry Grandis Jordan (Kathy) of Chesapeake, Va.; and herspecial friend, Gwen A. White of Columbia. She was a proud grandmother,known as “Granny” to Charles Haywood (Marcie), Kari Haywood, MickyHaywood, Katy Jo Haywood Walker (Joe), Mikey Buck Haywood, JenniferBeasley, and Whitney Haywood.
She loved being “Granny” togreat-grandchildren: Abby and Caroline Haywood, Leah and JordanHaywood, Audrey Brickhouse, Carter Collins, and Baylee and MadelineWalker. She was pre-deceased by a great-grandson, Ryan Beasley.
Sheappeared to have the energy of people half her age. She was ahomemaker, an excellent seamstress, did arts and crafts, was a clubleader in the Outer Banks Woman’s Club, and active in district andstate activities in the General Federation of Women’s Club-NC, wasactive in Colington United Methodist Church, loved the Dare CountyAngel Gift program, and loved helping anyone who needed her.
Whenher children were young – they all were good athletes — she raisedmoney for booster clubs, she served as PTA president, booster clubpresident, worked concession stands, and drove thousands of milesthrough the years because she never missed a football, basketball, orsoftball game.
Julia had a heart attack last December and herhealth began declining. She didn’t let it get her down, and she madesure that she talked with her co-chairman of the Angel Gift program sothey would have things organized for this December. Even then, she wasthinking of others and wanting to get the job done.
The familyappreciates all the love and support their family has received,especially from the Colington United Methodist Church and the ColingtonVolunteer Fire Department.
The visitation will be Saturday nightfrom 6 to 8 p.m. at Twiford Funeral Home in Manteo. Funeral serviceswill be Sunday, Oct. 5, at 2 p.m. at Twiford Funeral Home with theburial in the Colington North End Cemetery. A reception will beheld following the service at the Colington United Methodist Church.
